Photo 101: Cropping

I’ve been wanting to do a few posts relating to a few aspects of photography education. There are a few tips that I think everyone can benefit from, so we will be doing a “photo 101″ every now and then…first subject: Cropping!

When you are ordering a print, you may not always realize that it could result in the loss of some of your image. Usually this doesn’t matter, but depending on the image…it could make a big difference. A plus to ordering through us is that we always size the photo ourselves so that way we have complete control over the cropping. This isn’t always the case when you have them printed at your local convenience store.

For example, the image on the left is cropped to an 8×10 & the other is the entire image (as it would look as a 4×6 or 8×12)… Although the image on the left is still beautiful, we have lost the top where the trees come together…I just love those white trees against the blue sky, so I hate to see them cropped off.The following illustration gives you an idea of how much of the image is cropped off to achieve your desired size. With this particular image, I would crop more off the bottom than the top…so there is a little more room above his head, but I thought this made more of a point :) You may see now why I am not always a big fan of the 8×10 & 11×14…I don’t know why frame companies don’t just start enforcing an 8×12 or 10×15.

If you want a print that will show the entire image, the following sizes will result in a print without any of your image being trimmed off: 4×6, 6×9, 8×12, 10×15, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30

I can’t believe that it is June! I am in shock of the following things:

the year is flying by
my husband is home for the summer!
my May month of weddings is over…wow.

This past month I had a wedding every weekend…and it was amazing! I absolutely loved every single wedding, and I am so happy that I get to remember them everyday while I edit the photos! I am smiling all day long :)

Since it is now June, and Lindsay & Brian‘s wedding was last weekend, I can show you Lindsay’s gift to Brian.

I loved how it turned out…I wanted to keep it for my office, I just may have to get one for myself ;)

Premiere Album – Laura & Rob

Premiere Album

The Premiere Album is my favorite…it’s stunning. This album is our most popular for weddings, you can probably see why. Not only are the photographs printed directly onto the pages, the album as almost no gutter (the space in between the pages), and you’ve got over 100 different cover options – ranging from leathers, to silk, to linen…you name it! Each album is custom designed by me…so if there is the smallest change you’d like to make, no worries – I’ll do it!

Here is a look at my sister’s album from her May wedding. She chose the 8×10 horizontal album. (available in horizontal, vertical or square)

our “Classic Album”

Another beautiful album has joined our family of albums here at Cassidy Dawn Photography. Along with the Premiere & Gallery, we now have the Classic…and I love it!

This album is perfect for portrait shoots. Each album is custom designed (by me!) to fit your style & reflect your images…it’s all about you! The Classic Album consists of 20 8×10 prints mounted on sturdy pages. Because the images are mounted, rather than printed directly on the page (like the Premiere), this album is very affordable!

we love big prints!

I wanted to share with you a little suggestion when getting your photos printed – don’t be afraid to print them big! Really, just look at these images from a fall senior session. They turned out stunning. One of my favorite sizes is the 7×11 – so much more fun than an 8×10 (and you aren’t loosing half the image!). *The 7×11 are in the top & bottom left corner of the photo.

*I put a 4×6 in the bottom right hand corner so you can see the size difference!

All images can be mounted on matboard…so I thought I would share what that looks like. They are more durable & you really don’t even have to frame them, sometimes it looks great just propping them up on a shelf! *Keep in mind, that when matting photos, this might not be the best option…they can be hard to mat & frame. However, if you are framing them without a mat – it’s a great option!

Christmas Cards

I promise this is my last Christmas related post! I just wanted to post some of the Christmas cards that I designed for some great people this year. Be sure to be thinking about this for next year, it’s a great value, and who doesn’t want a great family photo for their cards?!

*You can also include a message on the back of the cards, it’s great for updating all those family & friends on what you are up to.

Next year I am planning on doing a day of mini sessions for cards – more on that later in the year.

I’m Back!

We are finally online here at CDP! I am *so* happy to have the internet back, really, you have no idea… Things have been super busy, but I wanted to take a break and show you a beautiful canvas that arrived this past week. This canvas is 20 x 40 (huge!) and I was so happy with how it turned out:
Oh, and a small note about Mid October sessions (I know, again?!)
I’ve had many, many requests for mid October (and we are booking them daily)…so if you are hoping for a session with our b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l Southern Ohio leaves, please contact me asap so we can put your day on the calender…they are going fast!
